Fear and control: the smoke detector in your head

You have an alarm system in your head that is millions of years old. It still works beautifully. Just not always for the right things.


A smoke alarm is not designed to understand, but to warn. It cannot know whether there is a real fire. Toast left in the toaster a little too long, steam from the shower, a battery that decides to run low at three in the morning, any harmless signal is enough to wake the entire house.

You could rip it out. For a few seconds that would feel wonderful.

Except then there would be nobody left to scream when something really is burning.

That is how fear works. There is an alarm system inside your head too. You did not design it yourself. You did not consciously choose what it responds to, and you cannot simply switch it off.

What you can do is learn to recognise what triggers the alarm. An alarm you understand sounds different from one that catches you off guard.

The smoke detector principle: why going off too often is smarter

The first question is also the most obvious one. If that alarm is so often false, why has evolution not fixed it long ago?

Because it is not a fault.

In 2001 the American psychiatrist and evolutionary biologist Randolph Nesse set out what he called the smoke detector principle.1 The reasoning is sober, almost like bookkeeping: the cost of a false alarm and the cost of a missed alarm are not equal. Running away a hundred times for nothing costs you some energy and an embarrassed face. Failing to run once when it mattered costs you everything.

When those two costs are that lopsided, an oversensitive system is, in pure arithmetic, the best system. Not the most pleasant one. The best one.

Nesse’s idea is an explanation, not a measured law of nature. But it does change how you look at yourself.

Your oversensitivity is not a design flaw in you. It is an insurance premium your ancestors took out, and that you are still paying every month. They never asked whether you wanted to join. But without that policy, none of them would have lived long enough to make you possible.

Which leaves the question of what that alarm actually is.

Fear is older than the feeling of fear

We use one word, fear, for two things that exist separately in the body.

The first is a set of automatic defensive reactions. The body switches over: muscles tighten, attention narrows to a single point, everything not needed at that moment is shut down. The second is the conscious feeling: I am afraid.

In 2016 the American neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux and psychiatrist Daniel Pine explained why that distinction matters: the networks in the brain that detect threat and set the body in motion are not the same as the networks that turn it into a felt, nameable emotion.2 Two systems, one word, centuries of confusion.

Put simply: your body has an opinion before you do.

That is an enormous relief. By the time you notice you are afraid, the rest of you is already twenty steps ahead. Those steps were taken for you.

So you are not late. You were built to arrive late. And that build is old. Much older than we are.

The five layers that were never thrown away

Evolution rarely demolishes. It renovates. Whatever worked stays where it is, another floor is added on top, and nobody clears out the basement. Our alarm system was built up in layers this way, and all of those layers are still there. At the same time. In you.

Layer 1: noticing damage. The oldest skill is not fear but something far simpler: being able to register that something is causing damage, and to move away from it. Whether the very first organisms felt anything while doing so, we do not know, and probably never will. Withdrawing does not have to be felt in order to work.

Layer 2: defending. Next comes the package you recognise from every animal: startling, freezing, fleeing, fighting. Fast, stupid, effective. A reaction that begins before you have understood why. Your hand is already off the hot pan while your head is still booting up.

Layer 3: predicting. This is the great leap. Not reacting once the damage is done, but learning which signal announces damage. From that moment on, an animal has a memory for danger: not only the bite is threatening, but also the dog, the street, the barking. Almost all of our personal fears are built on this layer. Not on what happened, but on what came just before it.

Layer 4: social safety. For a group animal, the group is not a luxury. Researchers once placed 148 separate studies side by side and added up the results. Together, more than 300,000 people. Those with stronger social ties turned out to have, on average, roughly a 50% greater chance of still being alive over the study period.3 Here it gets more nuanced: research like this shows that two things move together, it does not prove that one causes the other. But it does make it easier to understand why exclusion sets off such a physical alarm in us. Somewhere deep in the system it is written down: being alone is dangerous.

Layer 5: imagination. And then comes the layer that only we have taken this far. We can manufacture danger. With language, with memory, with scenarios about a future that does not yet exist and may never exist.

Two thousand years ago Seneca wrote a single sentence about it that nobody has improved on since:

There are more things likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality.

Notice what that sentence does not say. It does not say your fear is nonsense. It says that most of your fears take place somewhere you are the only resident.

Layer 5 is our greatest strength. Thinking ahead is the reason we plant harvests, raise children and develop vaccines. It is the engine behind everything humankind has ever built.

And it is exactly the same engine that keeps you awake at night. That is not a defect, that is the price. You cannot have the ability to look ahead without also having the ability to suffer ahead.

Fear and anxiousness are not the same thing

There is another distinction that brings calm, and it can be measured.

In 2010 the researchers Michael Davis, David Walker, Leigh Miles and Christian Grillon brought together the evidence for two different states.4 On one side short-lived fear: a sharp reaction that rises quickly and fades quickly, aimed at a concrete danger that is present right now. On the other side sustained anxiety: a lasting state of vigilance for something unclear, unpredictable or still far away. In animal research these two also appear to rely on partly different places in the brain.

To put it plainly. A car heading towards you: that is the first kind. Not knowing whether you will get through next month: that is the second.

That difference is not wordplay. The first system was made to be resolved within seconds. It has a beginning, a peak and an end. The second was made to stay switched on.

Much of what people call “anxiety” today, worry about work, health, money, children or the future, resembles that second system above all: sustained vigilance for something that is uncertain or still far away.

That is where the exhaustion lives. Not in the intensity, but in the duration. Your ancient alarm has no off switch for dangers that last for months. It was built for a sprint and you are asking it for a marathon. You are running on the spot all day.

Why some fears stick so easily

We do not learn every fear equally fast.

In 2001 the Swedish psychologist Arne Öhman and the American psychologist Susan Mineka summed it up in a single idea: the brain appears naturally prepared to link certain ancient threats to danger faster than new ones.5 We can apparently learn to fear snakes and spiders more easily than power sockets and cars, even though traffic and electricity also pose serious risks in our modern environment.

One of the most beautiful experiments came from Michael Cook and Mineka in 1990.6 Monkeys raised in a laboratory, who had never seen a snake, were shown videos of other monkeys reacting fearfully. If they saw a monkey recoil from a snake, they took that fear over. If they saw exactly the same fearful reaction directed at an artificial flower, nothing happened. The fear attached itself to one image and slid straight off the other, like water off glass.

And the nuance belongs here immediately. This is an explanatory model, not a closed case. Researchers still debate how strong and how general the effect is. What it certainly does not mean is that you are born with a ready-made list of fears.

You are born with an alarm that reacts faster to certain things, and with an enormous capacity to learn. That second quality is the most important sentence in this whole article.

A short tour of our fears

Everything above eventually reaches us in very ordinary forms. Kept short, because you will recognise most of them before the sentence is finished.

Fear of other people. An uncomfortable truth: throughout history, other people have been not only a source of protection but also a source of danger. Laws, manners and contracts help make cooperation more predictable. Civilisation is, to a large extent, a carefully maintained reassurance.

Fear of the group’s gaze. In Huis clos (1944) Sartre had a character say: “L’enfer, c’est les autres”, hell is other people. He did not mean that other people are annoying, but something sharper: that we constantly see ourselves through their eyes. In evolutionary terms that makes complete sense. Exclusion was once life-threatening. Your nervous system simply does not yet know that a painful group chat is not.

Fear of putting your life in someone else’s hands. You lie down, someone you barely know takes over, and there is nothing you can do. Underneath it there can be fear of a mistake, but also fear of losing control. Philosophically it may well be the most grown-up fear there is, because it acknowledges something true: we depend on one another. Trust is never self-evident. It is a risk you take knowingly, every single time.

Fear in love. Fear of abandonment is not a weakness of romantic people. It is layer 4 in its purest form. Whoever loves gives another person the power to hurt them, voluntarily. That is unsafe by definition. And the alternative, letting nobody close, is not safe either. It is only quieter.

Fear of death. Epicurus (341–270 BCE) tried to dismantle it with logic: “Death, the most feared of evils, is nothing to us, since as long as we exist death is not present, and when death is present, we do not exist.” Airtight as reasoning. Rarely enough as comfort, and anyone who has ever sat beside a hospital bed knows why.

Our fear of death is not really a thinking error. It is a declaration of love for a life we do not want to lose.

Fear of your own freedom. In Begrebet Angest (1844) the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard called anxiety the dizziness of freedom: the feeling that overtakes you when you realise you truly can choose, and therefore truly can fail.

This is the fear that rises before the job interview, before the first sentence of a book, before the decision to leave. It is not proof that you should not do something. It is usually proof that it matters.

Now lay those fears side by side. People, judgement, surrender, love, death, freedom. They look completely different. But underneath each of them lies the same question, wearing a different disguise each time: how much of this is actually in my hands?

Fear is often not only about danger. It is also about the question of how much control you actually have.

Who sets that alarm?

You inherit the system. The calibration happens along the way, by several hands at once, and rarely by your own.

Temperament. Some children react more strongly to unfamiliar people and new situations from an early age: they hold back, wait and watch, withdraw. Jacqueline Clauss and Jennifer Blackford placed seven studies side by side and found that these children had well over a sevenfold greater chance of developing strong social anxiety later on.7

And now the part that fits on no poster. Seven studies is not many, and a greater chance is not a destiny. The authors themselves estimate that around 15% of children are this reserved, and that roughly half of them eventually develop such an anxiety disorder.

Which also means: the other half do not.

Parents. Children look at their parent’s face to work out whether a situation is safe. In an experiment by Marc de Rosnay and colleagues, 24 mothers, none of whom were socially anxious, were trained to respond either in a relaxed or in a socially anxious way during an encounter with an unfamiliar man.8 Their babies, twelve to fourteen months old, were afterwards more fearful and more avoidant towards that particular stranger. Children with a naturally more anxious temperament reacted most strongly.

Please do not read that as blame. The effect concerned that moment, with that stranger, not a whole life.

And the influence runs both ways: a sensitive child calls forth more protection, and more protection leaves less opportunity to discover for yourself that it is not so bad. No perpetrator, no victim. A loop. And a loop can be broken.

Avoidance. This is one of the most important factors that can keep fear going, and one of the factors you can influence today.

Avoiding works instantly. That is exactly the problem. The tension drops, the relief is real, your body thanks you warmly. But that is precisely why the system never gets the chance to correct its prediction. Modern thinking about exposure treatment turns on exactly that point: what changes a fear lastingly is not that you survive the danger, but that your expectation is proven wrong.9

Put differently: your alarm is rarely convinced by reassurance alone. It learns above all from new, safe experiences in which a feared prediction does not come true.

School and peers. School introduces all the old threats in modern packaging: being judged, failing, losing your position, being humiliated in public. Researchers brought together 39 long-running studies and found that adversity in childhood, including bullying, was associated with a greater chance of a psychiatric disorder in adulthood. Depending on the form of adversity, that chance was roughly 1.2 to 2 times as high as for people without that experience.10

A greater chance, not a fate. The difference between those two words can be worth a whole life.

School can also be a place where the alarm is set more calmly. Sometimes one committed teacher who truly takes a child seriously can already make the difference.

Money. A young child does not understand a mortgage, but does notice the atmosphere around it. In the 1992 study by Rand Conger and colleagues, financial pressure in 205 families was linked to low mood in the parents, more conflict and disrupted parenting.11 The money therefore reached the child through the atmosphere in the house: through the silences, the tension, and the question of whether tomorrow would still be safe and predictable.

Why less fear is not the goal

There is a tempting fantasy: a life without any of this. No alarm, no nights, no vigilance. We know what that looks like.

A woman known in the literature as patient S.M. has, through a rare condition, damage on both sides to her amygdalae: two small, almond-shaped clusters deep in the brain that are involved in processing threatening and other significant signals. Researchers took her to a haunted house, had her hold live snakes and spiders, and showed her frightening films. She displayed no fear and reported almost none.

Her life history, meanwhile, contains a striking number of traumatic events.12

Her story therefore shows that having almost no fear does not automatically make you safer. Fear also has a protective function.

And then came the twist that makes this story genuinely interesting. The same researchers had her and two other patients with comparable damage inhale air with a high concentration of carbon dioxide, the gas you normally breathe out. The body reads that as: I am not getting enough air.

This time they did feel fear. Even panic attacks.13

Threat from the outside did not touch her. Threat from the inside, from her own body, did.

That turns the whole fantasy on its head. Fear is not one thing with one switch. There is no switch, operation, pill or mindset that shuts the human alarm system down completely and permanently. Treatment, including psychotherapy and sometimes medication, can change its calibration and the symptoms. Anyone who promises the complete removal of fear is promising too much.

You cannot remove it, only learn to read it.

What awareness can actually do

Here is the gain from this story: more modest than a promise, more usable than a trick.

Name which layer you are in. Is this layer 2, a body that startles? Or layer 5, an imagination building a future that does not yet exist? That distinction alone strips away the sense of inevitability. A thought about next month feels, inside, exactly like a danger in the room. But it is not. And you are allowed to say that difference out loud, to yourself if need be, in the middle of the night.

Put words to it. In a 2007 brain study by Matthew Lieberman and colleagues, the amygdalae, the same clusters mentioned above in connection with threat processing, became less active as soon as participants named their emotion instead of only undergoing it; an area at the front of the brain (the prefrontal cortex), involved in overview and restraint, became more active at that moment.14

Be honest here: this is a mechanism seen in a brain scan, not a treatment, and the effects in daily life are modest. One word does not solve a fear.

But it does fit with something people have been doing for centuries. Writing it down. Saying it out loud. Telling someone who still picks up the phone at half past eleven at night.

Move towards it, in small steps, when the situation is genuinely safe. If avoidance becomes a fixed pattern, your alarm gets little opportunity to learn anything new. By staying, step by step, and experiencing that a feared prediction does not come true or turns out differently, you can carefully rewrite that prediction. With severe or disruptive anxiety, guidance from a professional can be wise. Small. Not heroic. Small is allowed.

And ask: how high was this alarm set when I received it? By your temperament. By the faces around you. By a period when there was too little at home and nobody spoke about it.

That is not an accusation against anyone, not against your parents and certainly not against yourself. It is information. And you can do something with information, which is exactly what you cannot do with the fear itself.

That is how Seneca’s sentence comes back, and only now is it clear what it is really about. Not imagination, but control. The difference between what is truly yours and what you only think you are holding on to.

And that, strangely enough, is good news. Because the things that are truly yours are smaller than you fear. But they are there, and they are yours.

What you can do is walk towards it when it goes off. Check whether it is bread or fire.

That is a small difference. Over a single night it amounts to nothing. Over a lifetime it is enormous.
